BACKGROUND
When discussing my background, I am always a bit amused at my career path. The path that led to where I am today is rather unusual and unexpected. As long as I can remember I wanted to be a lawyer. My father was an attorney and later a judge. Growing up I lived with the law and his advice, which was; be a something other than a lawyer. Being me, stubborn and determined, I ended up in law school, graduating from the University of Michigan Law School.
After law school, I joined one of the biggest law firms in Michigan. I practiced there for five years with a practice that was focused mainly in litigation. In that time, I represented diverse clients, from billion dollar corporations to individuals, in a wide array of legal areas, including numerous successful civil litigation cases, business legal matters, and even fraud claims. Then, in a turn of events, I took an opportunity with Amway Corporation as in-house counsel.
Working as an in-house attorney was a big challenge. I honed my skills advising business principles and helping them manage risk without overly limiting the business opportunities. My duties included representing the Corporation in Attorney General inquires, distributor litigation, contract violation, and enforcement of the contract to ensure legal compliance. Seeing an opportunity, I spent two years and focused on unique business ventures, including Amway's private equity group and the Innovations Team. I know, lawyer and innovation usually don't go together-like I said unusual person and path.
Upon leaving Amway, I continued my legal practice and business experience, which included leading numerous companies, litigating cases, and assisting businesses with legal matters ranging from entity formation, human resource matters, collections, contract formation and negotiation.
The best part of my practice now is the ability to use my vast experience to help individuals and businesses with legal matters that matter to me; helping people when they are facing life altering challenges or opportunities. Also, quite often, I get to do so in jeans and a tee shirt.
